Dr. Susana Bustos- Integration: Rooting the plant teachings in daily life

The afterglow of a positive ayahuasca experience subsides sooner or later, whether changes install themselves organismically in us or we witness in dismay the creeping in of the same old repetitive patterns. But what makes a difference? How can we consciously work towards the embodiment of the plant teachings, the healing, the openings gained?

Informed by her clinical experience on the crossroads of entheogens and therapeutic change, in this presentation Susana Bustos, Ph.D. will discuss the process of integration, its stages, challenges and pitfalls, and offer concrete steps and alternatives to supporting the “building of bridges” into ordinary reality. Guidelines are offered to identify when the process may require specialized support, and what are some of the available options in these cases.

Susana Bustos, Ph.D., works as an integrative counselor, professor, and independent researcher on entheogenic shamanic traditions of the Americas. She holds degrees in Clinical Psychology (1992) and in Music Therapy (2002) from Chilean universities, as well as a doctorate in East-West Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco (2007), where she presently teaches courses in entheogenic shamanism and research design. She is certified in Holotropic Breathwork and the Expressive Arts.

Since 1999, Susana has been studying Vegetalismo and other shamanic practices. The process of integration of entheogenic experiences in ordinary life became one of her main interests during her stays as a clinical supervisor, trainer, and therapist at Takiwasi (a Peruvian center for the treatment of drug addiction which integrates indigenous and Western medicine). Other main clinical and research interests are the influence of song on entheogenic experiences, the effects of plant diets in psychotherapeutic processes, and the treatment of addiction.

Susana offers workshops and lectures internationally, and co-leads groups into the Amazonian rainforest. She also holds an integrative private practice in Berkeley, California.
